Ball Sight Words
(Kindergarten & First Grade)
During the 2016-2017 school year, the kindergarten team and the Title I team discussed the need for the kindergarten students to learn some of the basic sight words. They put a program in place called Ball Words. Nine lists (10-12 words each) were created that the children should start learning in kindergarten. These lists were taken from the Reading A-Z site and correlate with the high frequency books that Reading A-Z publishes on their website. This gives students a lot of reinforcement as they work on their words.
The lists can be found, in order, below. There is also a master list for your convenience. Words are posted in the classroom and they are often a password to get into the classrooms. They are worked on during Daily Five through a variety of activities and are also reviewed at the carpet. The words are introduced 2 at a time.
This program is individualized as the students will be able to move on to the next list as soon as they can read the previous list. This will allow the children to learn at their own pace. We will assess the children on a regular basis.
During the 2017-2018 school year, we plan to continue working through these lists in first grade. Please use these links to work with your children at home.
