Student Guided Reading Levels
Students are assessed on their reading reading ability using the Reading A-Z passage assessments. These passages are only shown to them for the assessment and we strive to assess with a passage they are unfamiliar with. We use the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Level system (most often referred to as GRL).
We look for two levels, an independent level and an instructional level. The levels that we tell the kids they are at is their independent level. A student is independent at a level when they can read the passage at 95%+ accuracy and comprehend it at 80%+ accuracy. An instructional level is one that they can read with 90-94% accuracy and/or below 80% comprehension.
Timelines for student guided reading level assessments differ based on the student's current independent level. If you ever feel that your child is reading at a level that is too easy for him/her, please contact us so we can reassess!
